5 Year Old Party Games

Stand in a Line

You will need: Stop watch if you want to time them.

Object of the game: For the children to arrange themselves in a line from the shortest at one end to the tallest at the other. Some games 5 year olds may find more challenging than others, so guide the children when needed.

Instructions:

  • Demonstrate to the children that they need to do, using 3 of the children.
  • The children mill round and when you shout GO they have to start lining up.
  • Repeat and see if they can do it faster.
  • Alternative for older kids:

Ask them to line up based on their ages, with the youngest at one end and the oldest at the other. Adult help may be required as the children will need to know exactly which month and date their birthday is.

    Chopstick and Raisins

5 year olds usually have more dexterity in their fingers, so this makes it a good kids game for the 5 years and older. Some indoor party games 5 year olds really love. You can use this as a team event.

You will need: A small bowl, a pair of chopsticks, a packet of raisins.

Object of the game: For the children to remove all the raisins from the bowl, using only the chopsticks.

    Instructions:

  • Fill the bowl with raisins, (2 bowls if it's a team race).
  • Each team has a pair of chopsticks.
  • When you shout GO, each child takes it in turns to pick the raisin out of the bowl using the chopsticks.
  • If they drop the raisin before removing it, then they hand the chopsticks over to the next child.
  • Once they have done 3 successful pick ups in a row, they hand the chopsticks over to the next child.
  • The first team to empty their bowl is the winner.

  • What's the Time Mr Wolf

I remember playing this game at school a very very long time ago, and children still love it today. Great kids games for the outdoors. I've seen this game done at a Pirate Party. Instead of Wolf they used Captain Hook.

You will need: No Props required for this kids birthday party game.

Object of the game: To NOT get caught by the wolf.

    Instructions:

  • Choose 1 child to be Mr Wolf(or Captain Hook).
  • Mr Wolf stands at one end of the garden, facing away from the children, who stand at the other end of the garden.
  • The children shout What's the time Mr Wolf?
  • Mr Wolf shouts back a time, anywhere between one o'clock to Twelve o'clock.
  • On hearing this, the children can move as many steps forward as was the time (three o'clock = 3 steps).
  • Eventually Mr Wolf can reply Dinner Time at which point he can turn around and chase the children.
  • The child that is caught by the wolf becomes the next wolf.

  • The children must travel in the wheelbarrow position to the finish line.

  • Donuts on a String

This is a good game to do after the kids have eaten the health food and it's time for the sweets. To avoid the mess this game is recommended for outdoors.

You will need: Donuts for each child, long piece of rope, enough string for each donuts.

Object of the game: To eat the donuts first.

  • Tie one end of a piece of string around one of the donuts, and the other end attach to the rope.
  • Repeat with all the donuts, space the donuts along the rope so that each child has plenty of room.
  • Make sure the donuts hang at a suitable height so that the children can reach the donuts with their mouth.
  • Line the children in-front of the donuts with their hands behind their back.
  • Shout GO, and the children can start eating the donuts as fast as they can.The first child to eat the donuts is the winner.

  • Upsy-Downsy

This is a throw and catch game of forfeits and is best played outdoors.

You will need: A small ball.

Object of the game: To throw and catch the ball without dropping it so that they don't have to do the forfeits. To be the last child in the game.

    Instructions:

  • The children stand in a circle not to far from each other.
  • The first child has the ball and throws it randomly to another child, (an option is that they shout the child's name out first).

  • If the child drops the ball, they suffer a forfeit. (See forfeit list below).
  • A forfeit can be reversed if on the next throw to them, they catch the ball.
  • If the ball is dropped when the child is laying flat on the floor (final forfeit), then they are out of the game.
  • The winner is the last child remaining in the game.
  • Forfeits, (in order):

  • Go down on 1 knee.
  • Go down on 2 knees.
  • Put one hand behind their back.
  • Lie down flat on the ground.
  • If you want to keep the throwing games happening, then why not get the Hot Potato game. It's a wild tater tossing game that kids love. Recommended for 5 years and above.

    Safety First.

If you're going to run kids birthday party games in your own home, whether indoors or outdoors, make sure that tools and chemicals are put away.

Check that fences and gates are secure, especially the pool or pond area. Ask a neighbor to look after any lively pets. If you don't want your best china to get broken, or the expensive vase that your great Aunty Mabel left you, then lock it away!

    Cleaning up.

After a kids birthday party, make sure that you have plenty of large garbage bags, for the disposable paper cups, plates and wrapping paper. You can get all these from Shindigz.com...Great Party Supplies at Low Prices. Also, stock up on paper towels because there will be food and drink spilt! Remind the children to go to the toilet, the best time is just before the birthday tea and cake comes out.

    Tears, Tantrums and Crowd Control.

Even a small group of children will need some from of crowd control.

I made sure that the rules were clearly set out at the start. I had prizes for the winners and the runners up, as well as the one that came last! I made sure that everyone walked away with a prize. I was lucky that most of the parents hung around, so they helped.

If they start to get too wild, run a quiet game like Pass the Parcel. If a child is tearful, have an adult sit with them in a quiet corner or read a story to them.

    Testimonials

"Thank you Katherine, love your site. I used your suggestions for my 4 year olds birthday party last week. 15 Kindergarden kids! My sister does face painting so we did that. I had a pass the parcel using nursery rhyme music I had a candy between each wrapping of paper which worked well. Finally I did some balloon games. They loved it. I especially liked your idea of having a story time at the end of the party, it worked well, my sister read the stories and I organized the parents as they arrived to pick up their kids. My little girl loved her special day and I think it was the games that made it work so well. Planning my sons 7th Birthday for next month now"

Just a quick note to let you know that I followed your instructions for running party games at my sons birthday party and it went really well. I did 3 games and the most popular was the obstacle course. I had 10 boys ages 6-10 and once they had played with the course I had set out they then started to create their own ideas for obstacles and rearranged the course making it harder and harder. This 1 game kept them entertained for over an hour.
