Can Turn A Good Party Into A Great Party

I love wearing party costumes. I really believe that the best parties are the ones where people make the effort to get into a fancy dress of some sort. Home made or hired, it's the effort that counts.




So why is it, that costumes can make a party so great? Personally, I think it's because everyone has something to talk about as soon as they arrive. It's a great ice breaker.

It's easier, even for the shyest of people, to start a conversation with someone they don't know. Simply talk about the costume!

It's great fun trying to guess who they're supposed to be! There is a sense of anonymity, especially if you wear a mask, add a couple of drinks if you need to, and away you go.

Costume Party

What I really like, is getting into character. I suggest that you do some research on your character first. Make sure the party costume is in keeping with the chosen party theme and play the part. You can have a lot of fun with it.

Why not have a costume competition, awarding prizes for the best, the most creative, or the most weird.

If you're clever with a sewing machine, you may be able to whip something up, buy a few props and accessories and you're done.

For many people though, the lack of time and creativity can be a problem.

Things To Consider When Choosing A Fancy Dress Costume

  • Will the party be held outdoors or indoors party?

    • Think about the weather/time of year. There's nothing worse than being freezing cold because you chose to wear a silky thin costume and it 10 degrees outside. Gorilla suit in mid summer may have the opposite effect, hot and sticky, but same outcome, uncomfortable!

  • Will you be eating food and drinking at the party?

    • Yes you probably will! So make sure that your costume is suitable, i.e. easy access to your mouth!

  • Costume Hire charges.

    • Often costume hire charges are for return next day. Check when you hire your costume when it has to be returned.

  • Who else has worn the costume before you?

  • You would expect that all costumes have been cleaned before you hire it. Always check and make a record (photo if necessary,)if there is any damage when it arrives or you collect it. I recommend that if a face mask or other props are used, then give them a good clean with an antibacterial wipe.

  • Going solo or part of a pair?

    • It can be fun to go as a couple, there are lots of Couples Costumes available, for example:

  • Robin Hood and maid marion
  • Shrek and Fiona
  • Hippie Couples
  • Wolverine and Storm
  • Viking Couples

    and many many more great costume ideas.

    Or, you could go as a group.

    Groups for example, could be ABBA, The Jackson 5, The Village People, Diana Ross and The Supremes. Bananas in Pyjamas, The Blues Brothers, Sonny and Cher, Anthony and Cleopatra to name a few.

    Just a quick note to let you know that I followed your instructions for running party games at my sons birthday party and it went really well. I did 3 games and the most popular was the obstacle course. I had 10 boys ages 6-10 and once they had played with the course I had set out they then started to create their own ideas for obstacles and rearranged the course making it harder and harder.
